What does Otoplasty mean? 

Otoplasty, also called ear pinning, is a very common and simple cosmetic surgical procedure that can be performed on one or both ears. The purpose is to balance their appearance, making them less prominent, less protruding or asymmetrical hence complimenting the rest of your face.  

Who can do it? 

Usually the procedure is performed on children at an early age (pre-schooling) to prevent teasing about their appearance, however it can also be easily performed in adulthood. 

At an early age, the ear cartilage is its most malleable, making the recovery time shorter easier.

What to expect during the procedure? 

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia for young children, while adults may opt for local anesthesia. 

The procedure will take between 1.5 to 2.5 hours, and consists of a small incision in the crease behind the ear to remove skin and some soft tissue. The gap is then closed by stiches and the scarring is very minimal, hidden behind the ear. 

What to expect after the procedure? 

Your head will be covered in a bandage for 3-5 days, so you’ll need to take a few days off work or school.  

Generally the bruising, like any other surgery, will fade in 2 weeks, but you will experience minimal pain , easily bearable with OTC painkillers. 

Once these dressing are removed, you will need to wear a headband for a month to help the placement of the ears during the healing process. 

The head is wrapped in gauze for several days and pain medication is prescribed though may not be necessary. Bruising will fade about two weeks after surgery.
