Hello Summer!

Hello Summer!

June 1, 2022

JUNE 1st 2022.

Dubai’s intense sun exposure can boost your normal water loss rate, and air conditioning can dry your skin further. That’s why it is very important to stay aware of your skin’s hydration levels in the summer months.

Our facial skin is very sensitive, especially when exposed to higher temperatures. Here are the most common skin challenges during summer:

  1. Uneven skin tone:

Mostly due to hyperpigmentation or “dark spots”. Melanin is the pigment responsible for the colour of our skin and it is responsible to protect our skin from sun damage by absorbing harmful UV rays and diverting them away from our DNA. So, when our skin is in danger or feels threatened, it responds by producing an excess of melanin. Here come the dark spots!

  1. Uneven skin texture:

Heat, chlorine (from the pools), salty water and air-conditioning are all responsible factors for creating a drying effect on our skin. If our skin isn’t producing enough natural oils (which create a protecting film), it can lead to patches of skin that are red, itchy, and flaky.

  1. Excess oil:

On the other hand, in hot, humid conditions, as a protective measure, our skin’s sebaceous glands produce more sebum, creating that oily, greasy layer, which, in turn, lead to congestion and skin breakouts!

  1. Large pores:

In summer, our pores become larger and this is naturally due to the increase sebum production. The problem arises when those pores are clogged, resulting in blackheads, whiteheads and acne!

Here 6 tips for your perfect summer skincare routine!

  1. Exfoliate:

The body sheds skin cells at a rapid rate – if you don’t exfoliate, these dead cells will sit on the skin and leave it looking dull and dry. Exfoliate 2-3 times a week and use products with 10% glycolic acid: this not only removes dull surface skin cells to reveal smoother, brighter skin below, but also helps to stimulate collagen and elastin production for a firmer, younger appearance.

  1. Tone:

Toning removes the dirt and build from make-up and pollution left behind by the cleanser/exfoliator, which can clog pores and lead to comedones. It also helps soothe, nourish and hydrate the skin while restoring its delicate pH balance.

  1. Protect:

Sunscreen is a must in summer. Opt for a moisturising SPF rather than a moisturiser that has some SPF in it.

  1. Keep hydrated:

Lack of hydration will turn your skin dry, tight and flaky. Dry skin has less resilience and is more prone to wrinkling. Drinking at least 8 classes of water a day will help but also try using a hydrating moisturiser and hyaluronic acid.

  1. Moisturise:

Moisturising is important for hydration. Hydrating with a hyaluronic acid serum acts as a sponge pulling water into the skin.

  1. Avoid thick make-up and creams:

These, teamed with sweat, will clog up pores and create a happy home for bacteria in the skin. Instead opt for breathable, mineral based make-up and tinted moisturisers.
